IMMIMPANGKEP – What do you know about the yellow book which in Arabic is called: Kutub Turots? Here’s an English write-up introducing Kitab Kuning, complete with references for further reading.
What is Kitab Kuning? Kitab Kuning (Kitab Turots), literally meaning “yellow book”, refers to a collection of classical Islamic texts traditionally studied in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) across Indonesia and parts of Southeast Asia. The name derives from the lightly yellow-tinted paper on which many of these texts were printed, although even later editions printed on white paper still retain the name Kitab Kuning.
Characteristics and Scope:
-
Content and Disciplines. These texts span a wide range of traditional Islamic sciences, including usul al-fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence), aqidah (creed), akhlaq (ethics), tasawwuf (Sufism), nahwu and sharaf (Arabic grammar), tajwid, tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis), hadith studies, and even social sciences.
-
Unvowelled Texts (“Gundul”). Often called kitab gundul or “bare books,” they are written in Arabic script without vowel marks (harakat), demanding strong linguistic competence from readers.
- Pedagogical Features. Symbolizing a structured learning tradition, Kitab Kuning texts are studied in stages—one book is completed before advancing to the next. This progression helps maintain academic discipline and depth.
