Ibn Umar (Radi Allahu Anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala),(Sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Islam is built upon five: to worship Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) and to disbelieve in what is worshiped besides him, to establish prayer, to give charity, to perform Hajj pilgrimage to the house, and to fast the month of Ramadan”.

Ramadhan is more than just Fasting
To a Muslim, fasting not only means abstaining from food, but also refraining from all vice and evils committed consciously or unconsciously. It is believed that if one voluntarily refrains from lawful foods and sex during Ramadan, he will develop self-restraint and be more able to avoid unlawful things and acts the rest of the year.
Abu Huraira (Radi Allahu Anhu) reported: A bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala),(Sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) and he said, “O Messenger of Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala), show me a deed by which I may enter Paradise.” The Prophet (Sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Worship Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) and never associate anything with Him, establish the prescribed prayers, give the obligatory charity, and fast of the month of Ramadan”.
The man said, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, I will never add anything to it, nor will I lessen anything from it.” When the man turned his back, the Prophet (Sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said:
“Whoever is pleased to see a man from the people of Paradise should look to him”.

The fast is broken at sunset. The Prophet Muhammed (Sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) recommended breaking the fast with a meal of dates. Muslims are urged to invite others to break the fast with them. These gatherings are called iftar parties.
The Prayer for Breaking the Fast..
One of the prayers that all Muslims recite when they break their fast after which the fasting members of my family would break their fast with a date. Fasting does not end unless this prayer is recited:
“Oh Allah! I fasted for You and I believe in You [and I put my trust in You] and I break my fast with your sustenance.”
Prayer for Forgiveness..
Ramadan is a time when Muslims are told through the Qur’an and in hadiths that Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala)will absolve them of their sins if they engage in sincere worship and repentance. The following prayer is a good one to recite during Ramadan to ask for Allah’s (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) forgiveness:
“Oh Allah, I ask You by Your mercy which envelopes all things, that You forgive me”.
This is a prayer that Abdullah ibn Amar (Radi Allahu Anhu), a companion of the Prophet Muhammad (Sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) used to recite as he was breaking his fast, as reported by Ibn abi Mulaykah.
Prayer for the First 10 Days of Ramadan..
Muslims scholars agree that Ramadan is such a holy month that any sort of prayer, whether it is a personal one from your heart or one from the Qur’an or other Islamic sacred texts, will surely be received by Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) and the rewards for those prayers will be numerous. But the Prophet Muhammad (Sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) did recommend Muslims to recite certain du’as at particular times during Ramadan. For example, during the first 10 days of the months, reciting the following prayer provides extra benefits:
“Oh my Lord and Sustainer please forgive me and be merciful to me. You are the best amongst those who show mercy”.
Prayer for Second 10 Days of Ramadan..
This prayer, which is from the Qur’an, was recommended by the Prophet Muhammad (Sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) to be recited as much as possible during the second 10 days of Ramadan for maximum rewards and forgiveness of sins:
“Oh Allah indeed you are the greatest pardoner and you like the act of pardoning. Hence, please forgive us”.
Prayer for the Third 10 days of Ramadan..
This particular prayer was recommended by the Prophet Muhammad (Sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) to be recited during the last 10 days Ramadan as much as possible. It beseeches Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) to forgive us, because Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) is indeed the best at forgiving humans for their mistakes.
“I seek forgiveness of all my sins from Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) who is my lord and sustainer and I return back in repentance to him alone”.
Just after breaking the fast but before dinner, Muslims offer the fourth of the five daily prayers, which is called the Maghrib prayer. After dinner, Muslims go to their houses of worship, called mosques (Masjid), to offer the Isha prayer, which is the last of the five daily prayers. The day ends with a special voluntary prayer, the Taraweeh, offered by the congregation reciting the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam.
The last ten days of Ramadan are considered highly blessed, (All odd number nights eg. 21st,23rd,25th,27th,29th) especially the 27th night which is called laylat al-qadr – the “Night of Power,” or the “Night of Destiny.” It is believed that on this night the prophet Muhammed (Sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) received the first revelation of the Qur’an. For many Muslims, this 10-day period is marked by a heightened spiritual intensity, and they may spend these nights praying and reciting the Qur’an.
After 30 days of fasting, the end of the month of Ramadan is observed with a day of celebration called Eid-ul-Fitr. On this day, Muslims gather in one place to offer a prayer of thanks. It is traditional to wear new clothes, visit friends and relatives, exchange gifts, eat delicious dishes prepared for this occasion, and wait patiently for the next year.
May Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) bless us all during this month of Ramadan and grant us the opportunity to reach the next Ramadan and accept our efforts and prayers. Aameen. (*)
